From the period sources

Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel, a prolific and able Saxon composer, received his early musical training from his organist father, as well as from cantor Umlauf in Schneeberg and musical director Hofmann in Leipzig, according to the Dictionary of Music (1908). He began his career as a music teacher in Breslau, where his first opera, Narcissus, premiered in 1711. This was followed by several more operas for Naumburg, all in 1712, before he embarked on a multi-year sojourn in Italy. Upon his return, Stölzel spent a significant period in Prague, where he composed operas such as Venus und Adonis (1714) and Acis und Galathea (1715), the latter of which is noted in the Cyclopedia of Music and Musicians (1888) as an early German treatment of the Ovidian tale.

Stölzel later served as court Kapellmeister at Gotha from 1719, a position he held until his death. His extensive output, which remained largely in manuscript, included twenty-two operas, fourteen oratorios, and eight double annual series of cantatas and motets, alongside symphonies and chamber music (Dictionary of Music, 1908). Notably, he was a member of the Leipzig Musical Union between 1707 and 1710, and later, in 1747, joined Mizler’s musical society, alongside figures like Telemann and Handel, as recorded in Johann Sebastian Bach: His Work and Influence on the Music of Germany, Vol. 3 (1884). Stölzel’s work was known to Bach, who, according to Johann Sebastian Bach: His Work and Influence on the Music of Germany, Vol. 2 (1899), “amused himself by adding to its minuet a trio, which is as delightful as it is learned” for a four-part suite in G minor by the Gotha Kapellmeister. Stölzel also contributed to the development of keyboard music, with A History of Pianoforte-Playing and Pianoforte-Literature (1897) mentioning his “Enharmonic Clavier-sonata.”
