From the period sources

Émile Pessard, a French composer and educator, was a significant figure in Parisian musical life at the turn of the 20th century. He received a comprehensive education at the Paris Conservatoire, studying harmony with Dubois, composition and fugue with Massenet, and organ, improvisation, and composition with César Franck, according to A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (1900). His student years were marked by success, earning him first prizes in harmony (1877) and organ (1880), as well as the prestigious Rossini prize in 1885.

Pessard’s career combined composition with influential teaching and administrative roles. He served as organist at Notre Dame des Champs from 1882 to 1887, and subsequently at Saint-Roch. By 1894, he had become a professor of harmony at the Conservatoire, and from 1895, the Inspector-General of musical instruction in the Paris Schools (A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 1900). His pedagogical impact is evident in his notable students, including Gustave Charpentier, who studied harmony with Pessard at the Conservatoire (Grove’s Dictionary, 1904), and Justin Clerice, a pupil in 1882 (A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 1905). Pessard also published a “Traité d’Harmonie théorique et pratique” (A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 1900). While his 1892 lyric drama Enguerrande was a “fiasco” at the Opéra-Comique (A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 1900), his opera Le Capitaine Fracasse (1878) was staged at the Théâtre Lyrique, an important venue for young artists (Famous Composers and Their Works, 1891). He was recognized with the Legion of Honour in 1879 (Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 1886).
