From the period sources

Felipe Pedrell, a self-taught musician born in Tortosa, Spain, in 1841, rose to become “the acknowledged head of modern Spanish music” by 1904, according to Grove’s Dictionary (1904). His influence extended to a younger generation of composers, as Enrique Granados y Campina studied under him in Madrid from 1884 to 1887, and his nephew, Carlos Pedrell, began studies with him between 1898 and 1900 (Grove’s American Supplement, 1922). Pedrell was a prolific writer on music, authoring a Diccionario tecnico in 1894 and editing La musica religiosa, a periodical dedicated to church music (Dictionary of Music, 1908; Grove’s Dictionary, 1904). His editorial work on old Spanish music was considered of the “highest value,” notably the series Hispaniae Schola Musica Sacra, which began around 1894, and a “splendid edition” of the complete works of T. L. da Victoria (Grove’s Dictionary, 1904). As a student of folk-lore, he argued that “every country’s music must be based upon its own folk-song” in works like Musicos anonimos and Por nuestra musica. His dramatic compositions include the operas El ultimo Abencerrajo (1874), Quasimodo (1875), and the successful trilogy Los Pirineos (1902), which, according to Grove’s Dictionary (1904), showed the “influence of Wagner” yet also bore the “good fruit” of his archaeological studies in its contrapuntal writing for chorus.
