Gustav Lange, a German pianist and composer born in Schwerstedt in 1830, received his early musical education from his father, an organist, and later studied with G. Schumann and Loeschhorn. He became known for his numerous transcriptions and original works for piano, which include pieces such as Le Papillon, La Reine du Bal, Le Retour du Soldat, Treue Liebe, Glockchen, Hortensia, and Harpe Eolienne, alongside various sonatinas, a Lyrisches Tonstück, and Bunte Blätter. While many of these compositions were considered “very pleasing and pretty in character,” a contemporary assessment in A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (1900) noted that they were “not marked by any very striking features.”
