From the period sources

Johann Philipp Krieger, born in Nuremberg in 1649 to an eminent merchant, began his musical education on the clavier at age eight with Johann Drechsel, a disciple of Froberger (A General History of the Science and Practice of Music, Vol. 2, 1875). His studies continued in Copenhagen under Johann Schroder, organist of St. Peter’s, and with the royal chapel-master Forster, where he received “considerable improvement” (A General History, Vol. 2, 1875). Krieger’s travels took him to Italy in 1672, where he refined his skills with Abbatini and the renowned harpsichordist Pasquini in Rome, and later with Rovetta in Naples (A General History, Vol. 2, 1875). Upon his return to Germany, Emperor Leopold I, after hearing him perform in Vienna, presented him with a purse of ducats and a gold medal and chain, and Krieger was subsequently ennobled (A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 1900; A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 2nd ed., 1905). He served as Kapellmeister to the Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels for nearly forty years, a position he held until his death in 1725 (A General History, Vol. 2, 1875). His compositions, which included sonatas for violin and viol da gamba, “Field Music” for trumpets, Latin and German Psalms, and songs for his operas Flora, Cecrops, and Procris, were diverse (A General History, Vol. 2, 1875). Notably, his canzones were considered exemplary of “the true organ style” (A General History, Vol. 1, 1875). He also taught composition, with Johann Augustin Kobelius and Nicolas Deinl among his pupils (Dictionary of Music, 1908; Biographie universelle des musiciens, Vol. 3, 1837).
