From the period sources

Gabriel Grovlez, a French pianist and violinist born in Lille in 1879, received his training at the Paris Conservatory before embarking on a European tour with violinist Marteau in 1899, according to The New Encyclopedia of Music and Musicians (1924). His career was marked by a variety of significant musical roles, including teaching at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, serving as concertmaster at the opera, and conducting at the Opéra-Comique and the São Carlos in Lisbon. He also held the position of concertmaster at the Théâtre des Arts in Paris and, from 1922, was associated with the Chicago Opera Co. As a composer, Grovlez produced two symphonic poems, two ballets between 1920 and 1921, incidental music for plays, impressionistic piano pieces, and approximately fifty songs. His contemporary standing is further evidenced by his inclusion as a French contributor to The Musical Quarterly by 1919, a publication that, as Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians: American Supplement (1920) notes, aimed to draw “from foreign writers as freely as from American” to achieve its “cosmopolitan scope.”
