From the period sources

Jacques-Hippolyte-Aristide Farrenc, a French flutist and composer, began his musical career in Paris, becoming second flute at the Théâtre Italien in 1815 after studying at the Conservatoire from 1806, according to A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (1900). He also established a music-shop, taught, and composed works specifically for his instrument, including a concerto, sonatas, and variations for flute. Farrenc developed a keen interest in music history, spurred by the historic concerts and writings of Fétis. He diligently collected material to correct existing biographies, which he “generously turned over to Fetis for use in the 2nd ed. of his great work,” even reading proofs for the publication (A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 1900). Beyond his historical contributions, Farrenc was also a writer, contributing papers to “La France musicale” and other journals from 1854, and a catalogue of his musical library was issued in 1866, as noted in Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (1886).
