Auguste-Frédéric Durand, originally Duranowski, was a violinist born in Warsaw in 1770. He received his initial training from his father, who served as a court musician in Warsaw, before a nobleman sponsored his studies in Paris in 1787 (A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 1900). There, Durand became a pupil of Viotti, developing into an “extremely brilliant and original player.” After extensive tours through Germany and Italy, he briefly served in the French army. Following his dismissal, Durand returned to the violin, leading a peripatetic existence in Germany until 1814, when he established himself in Strassburg as a conductor and teacher, where he was still living in 1834 (A Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 1900).
