Jacques Boyvin secured the prestigious position of organist at the Rouen Cathedral in 1674, a role he obtained after a rigorous competition. According to the Biographie universelle des musiciens et bibliographie générale de la musique (1883), this contest took place in the Chapter Library, overseen by a commission of canons. Boyvin faced a formidable rival in an organist named Maréchal, with the candidates challenging each other to treat a fugue subject without the aid of an instrument.
